RWECS: An electronic device to measure Loss of Contact (LOC) in race walking

01

The lack of an objective method for judging the loss of contact in race walking

02

The loss of confidence in the discipline

03

The controversy around race walking in the media

The RWECS Connect app for Garmin watches is designed to monitor heart rate, flight time (in milliseconds), and a timer during physical activity.

  • – The Flight Time displayed is the maximum value from the last N steps, where N is set in the app settings as the Step Sample Size (range: 5 to 15 steps).

  • – You can connect only one external device via the Pair menu.

  • – After pairing, use the Start option to begin data tracking.

  • – In Settings, you can define:

    • > An alarm threshold (0–60 ms); the watch will beep if this is exceeded.

    • > The Step Sample Size, which determines how often the flight time value updates.

This app is useful for athletes or researchers tracking running dynamics, particularly flight time as a measure of performance or form.

Single use (to be used on a treadmill or wearing the smartphone)

  • – 1 or 2 devices
  • – Shows FT Step by Step
  • – Sound if FT > Limit
  • – Voice synthesis
  • – mean FT (ms)
  • – mean Pace (min/km)
  • – Stores GPS position

The RWECS Android app allows coaches and trainers to monitor up to 10 devices (5 athletes with 2 devices or 10 athletes with 1 device  simultaneously during race walking training sessions. It connects via Bluetooth 5.0 to RWECS wearable devices and provides real-time data on Flight Time (FT) and steps, with the option to use one or two devices per athlete.

Key features:

  • Live monitoring of FT and step count during training when the devices are in range (+-20 meters).

  • Session recording and data storage step by step directly on the devices.

  • – Devices can be easily initializedstarted, and stopped from the app.

  • – Step by step Data can be downloadederased, or sent via email for analysis.

  • – Devices can be put in sleep or deep sleep to save battery.

  • – Users can visualize performance data through plots, even before download.

  • – Pairing in numerical order ensures synchronized data collection, and the system distinguishes left/right leg FT when two devices are used.

Ideal for structured group training, this system gives coaches a detailed look into the Loss of Contact time (FT) of their athletes in real time when they are in the range of the smartphone and a detailed step by step analysis post-session.

Welcome screen + Identification

Time State register for all athletes

Main Screen with the last Mean Fly Time for all athletes

FT for all plus Time register of right and left FT of a selected athlete

The devices measure the Time of the Heel-Impact and the Time of the Toe-off events, for each foot, step by step

And also the Contact Time and the Time spent on Air
for each foot could be calculated

From these times the Flight Time for each foot could be calculated step by step

The effective (visual) Flight Time is an average of the Right and Left Leg Using both legs asymmetry could be measured

The histogram of the Flight Time could be obtained for a given period of time. For both feet or for a single foot.
